Sunday, August 20, 2017   (0 Comments)
New Orleans, LA--The National Food & Beverage Foundation (NatFAB) is excited to announce that the Lee Household Flour Mill, the makers of the first electrically powered stone flour mill to be used at home, is the next listing on their National Culinary Heritage Register. Dr. Royal Lee, a prolific inventor and pioneer of holistic nutrition, developed the flour mill in 1949 and it became of one the key products of his company, Lee Engineering. On July 15, 2017, Liz Williams, President of the National Food & Beverage Foundation, presented the Register Certificate to Jon Mueller, Marketing Specialist for Lee Engineering.

NatFAB’s National Culinary Heritage Register is a list of culinary products, processes, inventions, traditions, and establishments that are at least fifty years old and that have contributed significantly to the development of American foodways. The first and only register of its kind, the National Culinary Heritage Register is an initiative designed to explore and preserve the complex history of food and beverage in America. "Appliance manufacturing is a key component in the development of the culture of eating,” says Liz Williams, President of National Food & Beverage Foundation, "we are proud to have the Lee Household Flour Mill and Lee Engineering joint the Register.”

Mueller states, "It’s fulfilling to continue the work of Dr. Royal Lee and provide a product that makes delicious and nutritious food. We’re grateful to NatFAB for honoring this product and effort.”

Food and beverage practices not only play a major role in America’s cultural identity, but they also offer valuable insights into the country’s past and present environment, economy, and social structures. Thus, understanding when, where, and how American food and beverage practices have developed allows for a more complete understanding of America’s culture and history. Mapping the origins and development of America’s complex culinary traditions is a daunting task, and as of yet, there has been no concerted effort to do so.  By creating the Culinary Heritage Register, NatFAB hopes to begin the important process of recording America’s extensive and flavorful foodways.

The National Food & Beverage Foundation (NatFAB) is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit cultural enterprise. It documents and celebrates the food and drink of all cultures through exhibits, programming, and a range of media. Because everyone eats, all aspects of food and drink—culture and geography, anthropology and history, economics and politics, law and policy, media and the arts, science and technology—reveal the state of the world. NatFAB, home to the Southern Food & Beverage Museum, The Museum of the American Cocktail (MOTAC), Pacific Food & Beverage Museum, the John & Bonnie Boyd Hospitality & Culinary Library, SoFAB Media, and the National Culinary Heritage Register, is among the nation’s most comprehensive cultural institutions studying food and drink. About Lee Engineering/Lee Household Flour Mill
In 1941, our founder Dr. Royal Lee organized the Lee Foundation for Nutritional Research. The goal of the foundation was to address nutritional challenges and educate people about the importance of proper nutrition. Under the auspices of the foundation, Dr. Lee published countless works of research on the topic of whole food nutrition and its positive effect on health and wellbeing. As a leading critic of commercially produced flour, Dr. Lee developed a home flour mill as a way for average Americans to derive the optimal nutritional benefit in whole wheat flour. He marketed and sold this mill under the Lee Engineering brand. We have since redesigned and upgraded the mill to create an even higher quality product. We now offer the Lee Household Flour Mill, organic whole grains and other nutrition-focused products under the Standard Process subsidiary brand Royal Lee Organics™.
