Pabst warehouse being transformed into future home of Milwaukee Brewing Co.: Slideshow

Developer Scott Lurie walks through the gigantic former warehouse in downtown Milwaukee, and said he hopes it will become one of the top attractions in the city.

It’s a huge building for a downtown area, covering almost 3 acres, and it has sat largely unused since Pabst Brewing Co. moved out of Milwaukee. Construction started about 45 days ago to transform it into a new home for Milwaukee Brewing Co., a restaurant, event hall and offices.

See the attached slideshow for a walk-through of the property to see the construction work on the building at North Eighth Street and West Juneau Avenue. It is among the major projects underway at The Brewery neighborhood, just west of the Milwaukee Bucks' arena district. Two new apartment buildings and a 150-room hotel also are under construction at The Brewery.

Lurie walks through the former shipping center, which is mostly empty save for contractors and their equipment, and describes what it will become once all the construction is done by this time next year.

The northern side along Juneau Avenue will become offices. A second floor will be built in the 28-foot-tall space to create the 52,000 square feet of office space.

Lurie said more than half of the office space has been leased to law firms and an investment firm. Closer to the center of the building are shared amenities for companies in the offices. Those include a bar and coffee bar, lounges, a small movie theater for presentations and a meeting room.

The offices are the first space that will be complete, Lurie said, and will be done before this time next year.

The office commons area will share a wall with the restaurant that is planned for the center of the building. It will cook food for a neighboring event space, which will have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown and the arena district. A dumbwaiter will be built to carry food from the restaurant’s kitchen to an outdoor, rooftop patio, Lurie said.

The restaurant space currently is covered with a large plastic "pool” contractors built after cutting out a major chunk of the roof to create a new skylight.

MKE Brewing will fill the southern areas of the building with a tasting room, its brewing operations and, in keeping with the building’s original use, warehousing. The tall brewing kettles will be visible from the event space, and will be displayed in large windows opening east toward downtown. Visitors will go up to a second-floor mezzanine for an elevated tour of the brewing operations, Lurie said.

There’s a lower level of the building that belongs to Highland Development Ventures of White Plains, N.Y. Highland Development is nearly complete with its project to convert the lower level into self-storage that will operate under the Extra Space brand.
