Global bioscience company Chr. Hansen will set up a new North American food coloring facility in Mukwonago that will create up to 80 jobs.

The company, based in Denmark, already has operations in Milwaukee, but bought the CI Banker Wire & Iron Works building at 600 Perkins Drive in Mukwonago for this expansion. That building will become the North American headquarters of Chr. Hansen’s Natural Colors Division, hosting production, research, warehousing, sales and marketing operations.

It is the largest single investment by that Chr. Hansen division in "recent years,” according to Jacob Vishof Paulsen, acting executive vice president of Natural Colors Division. It will expand the company’s natural food coloring production capacity.

"Having the whole chain gathered in one place will allow for a fast and agile response to customer needs, supporting Chr. Hansen’s current and future business demands for the next decade – with room to grow,” Paulsen said.

Some equipment and the natural food color manufacturing operations will transfer to the Mukwonago building from Milwaukee. Space that opens up in Milwaukee will be repurposed, but future uses have not been determined, according to a company spokeswoman.

Chr. Hansen will take over the almost 152,000-square-foot building in 2019, opening with 70 to 80 workers. The company must wait until after Banker Wire moves into a new headquarters that is under construction in Mukwonago and set to be completed later this year. Chr. Hansen’s operations in Milwaukee will remain.
