MANITOWOC - Manitowoc-based Lakeside Foods announced Tuesday it has entered into an agreement to acquire Good Eats Food Co. and its products offered under the SER!OUS Bean Co. and Ruthie’s Twisted Harvest brands. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

In a press release, Lakeside said the acquisition allows it "to broaden and accelerate development of new products."

"Innovation is the cornerstone of our strategy," Glen Tellock, Lakeside Foods president and CEO said in the release. "Consumer preferences, and therefore customer needs, are evolving faster than ever.”

Good Eats will operate as a division of Lakeside while co-founders Matt Brown and Trey Taylor will join Lakeside to lead the company's sales and innovation efforts, the release said.

"Good Eats injects a shot of entrepreneurial spirit into Lakeside, which will help us more quickly advance around this key strategic priority," Tellock said. "Lakeside, on the other hand, provides the needed scale for SER!OUS Bean Co. and Ruthie’s Twisted Harvest to efficiently expand. Ultimately, our customers win.”

Good Eats, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, has a line of premium canned beans under the SER!OUS Bean Co. brand featuring Dr. Pepper Sweet & A Bit Sassy, Buckin’ Buffalo, Chipotle Tomato and Cracked Pepper.

Good Eats also offers a frozen vegetable product line shipping in food service and retail that features Mexican Street Corn, Sweet Potato Smashers (available in Bourbon Brown Sugar and Plain) and Cauli Smashers mashed cauliflower.

According to Brown and Taylor, the combination of Lakeside’s sourcing, manufacturing, product development and logistics expertise will "allow Good Eats to focus more attention on trends, consumer insights and the development of new innovative products to help continue the success Good Eats has experienced in its first three years."

Brown will lead sales for both Lakeside Foods and Good Eats as vice president of sales while Taylor will lead marketing and innovation efforts.

In April, Lakeside acquired Two Rivers-based Riverside Foods, which produces specialty cheese, frozen vegetables and seafood products under brand names such as Kettle Brau, Trivers, Super Samplers, Smokehouse and Riverside.

And in January, Lakeside announced a $40 million, 10,000-square-foot addition to its packaging facility at 1601 S. 30th St. that is expected to bring up to 40 new jobs. The addition could consist of a larger frozen warehouse and increased refrigerated packaging space along with room for additional office and ancillary space. The expansion is projected to be finished in spring 2019, previous USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reports said.

Lakeside Foods is a supplier of frozen and canned foods to the retail, foodservice and industrial sectors. It has expanded in its 130 years from one small pea-canning facility to a 13-plant operation, producing canned and frozen vegetables, frozen desserts and appetizers, and canned pet food.
