Mount Mary University will begin this fall to offer a master’s degree in food science.

The program responds to needs in the region’s food and beverage industry, the Milwaukee-based private institution said in a news release. The degree targets industry professionals and anyone with an undergraduate major, particularly in chemistry or biology.

At the undergraduate level, Mount Mary’s programs are for women only. Both women and men can apply to the master’s in food science program, the release says.

Through the program, students can obtain professional development certificates in food processing chemistry, food science research and food safety and toxicology.

University president Christine Pharr said the master’s program offers online, blended and on-campus weekend classes so professionals can work while they earn the degree.

"Students also have the option to conduct thesis research on campus or at the site of their current employer,” Pharr said in the announcement.

Mount Mary also offers an undergraduate degree in food science. Students can participate in a university program that allows undergraduate students to earn their master’s degree in five years.
