What You Do

  • Takes ownership of aligning on technical sustainability solutions and aligning with overall company sustainability strategy to ensure that the right technical solutions are developed for deployment. Solutions may include high barrier mono-material flexible films, high barrier paper/fibre based materials, in addition to high barrier bio-based structures.
  • Participates in packaging associations and utilizes global networking in the industry to ensure that Sargento capitalizes on the latest trends, technology, and processes.
  • Keeps up with advancements and new technologies in sustainable packaging and creates an innovation “pipeline” of new and emerging packaging sustainability options that cover the spectrum of flexible and semi-rigid polymer packaging.
  • Understands recycling technologies and how sustainable materials fit within existing and future streams to ensure circularity of all polymeric materials utilized. Has kept abreast of major influencers and organizations that provide appropriate guidance to converters and CPGs relative to ‘recycle ready’.
  • Develops and participates in the development of design briefs and/or charter documents, through collaboration with others, that define objectives, in/out of scope, and deliverables.
  • Challenges guardrails to ensure that project scope is well defined and agreed upon throughout each initiative.
  • Diagnoses and foresees potential issues related to product, process, and package as they relate to equipment/material interface in addition to product/material interface and presents innovative solutions.
  • Supports the stage gate process and understands the role packaging plays within each step of the process.Influence project direction, at all levels of the organization.
  • Utilizes the tools (software and hardware) that are required to bring ideas to life and communicates the value of packaging, product, and process through prototypes.
  • Maximizes collaboration, through communication at all levels, and ensures teams are selecting the best alternatives to meet project goals and timing, without jeopardizing project execution.
  • Develops packaging specifications for existing and new materials.
  • This position may have assigned direct reports and may assist in training and development of new packaging employees or interns/co-ops.
  • Inventing may occur or be required as part of this position:Invents or discovers new and useful processes, machines, manufacturers, or compositions of matter, or any new and useful improvements thereof for the exclusive use by and ownership of Sargento.
  • Assigns all ideas and inventions conceived or developed while employed by Sargento or because of employment with Sargento.
  • Discloses to Sargento any inventions that are conceived or made.
  • Assists in making patent applications as well as refrains from disclosing inventions or ideas to others unless requested to do so by Sargento and assigns all rights to Sargento.
  • Travel is required as needed to complete the functions within this position.
  • Daily travel between facilities and local suppliers is to be expected with the use of the person’s own vehicle required.
  • Overnight travel will be required as needed to support projects or for training purposes.
  • Extended periods of overnight travel may be required on occasion to support remote manufacturing operations or in support of projects with remote vendors.

Your Qualifications

  • BS in Packaging or equivalent required.
  • Additional educational courses will be required as needed to sustain departmental/individual technological levels.
  • 6+ years of overall progressive packaging materials experience that includes 4+ years of progressive packaging engineering experience within the food industry required.
  • Strong business acumen and extensive experience with Marketing, Sales, Finance, Procurement, Brand Design, Category Management, etc.
  • Familiarity with SAP/PLM, or similar systems, in addition to TOPS or CAPE. Familiarity with ArtiosCAD and Adobe Illustrator preferred.
  • Experience must also include support of new and existing packaging operations with a proven record of continuous improvement and cost savings.
  • Must be able to provide examples of close collaboration with Operations, Engineering, and Quality Systems.
  • Solid understanding of flexible and rigid packaging in a cheese and/or meat environment highly desired.
  • Demonstration of strong collaboration with material vendors is required.
  • Knowledge of MAP and other forms of product preservation and their interaction with product packaging is highly desired.
